The Rolling Stone "Online"

I Russ McNitt have taken over as Webmaster for our Departed Shipmate David Vydra. David has created an amazing amount of code to create this website. It is very much appreiciated and I as a novice have some very big shoes to fill. The following is by David and until I get a handle on everything I prefer not to delete it. (Created By David) I hope that you have enjoyed what has been done thus far.  There is still much to do.  How much more will depend a great deal on our members.  And, as this site is  an official Association publication, it has the obligation to serve all of the members as well as non-members.  I am still compiling the data-base that will comprise the "Crew Members" page.  I have some, but not many, tales of "Cruises" from past Rolling Stone News-letters.  With that said, this is what I am looking for to compliment the site.

SUPPORT!  I would like to extend my appreciation to those who have expressed their desire to assist in the financial support to the site.  The Officers of the Association have committed to providing the funds necessary to cover the expenses involved.  However, the treasury of the Association is seldom in a position to do this.   Therefore, it was proposed and accepted that the membership be asked for additional support.  A one-time voluntary contribution of $50.00 as a "Site Sponsor",  $25.00 as a "Site Supporter" or for $20.00 or less as a "Site Patron" will be acknowledged on the Ship's Company page.  All contributions will be tax deductible and should be made out to U.S.S. Whetstone Association.  Mail to: Kay Goble, 6200 Emerald Pines Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33912.  Indicate the purpose in the Memo space.  Should contributions exceed costs, the excess will remain deposited with the Assoc. for the next reunion.  As an official Association publication we have to maintain a site free of advertisements.

GRAPHICS!  Color photos of any Whetstone connected event (and the story that goes with it).  In particular, we need a color photo of the "Stone".   Preferably, underway.  Photos may be submitted in any form.  An emailed GIF would be best if it is high resolution in case editing is required.  Actual photos will be returned whenever possible.   Negatives will not be returned.

bullet

AUDIO!  Does anyone have a bosuns pipe?  Are you able to use it?  And do you have a PC?  We would like to include some command calls on certain pages and need someone able to create them on their PC.

bullet

STORIES!  Sea stories, Cruise memories, Events the crew was a part of (Charitable, Community, etc.) and Cruise agendas with Ports of Call.  Anything that happened to or with the "Stone".  And, we would like to begin a category called: "Memorable Shipmates".

bullet

DATA!  We will obtain some from the Association.  However, in order to provide security for the Crewmembers Page, additional data will be required.  This is why we have a page to enable shipmates to Join the Association.  We will than have the ability to enable registration for the
logon and password requirements for the Crewmembers Page.  Some of this data will be used in a more generic "Shipmates" listing which is available for all to see in the Assn. Members Page.

This is pretty much what we need for now.  Your suggestions will determine
changes to be made.  Your contributions will determine the depth of our site.

Mystery!   Mystery!  Mystery!

We have two mysteries that need to be solved.  Who has the answer to either one?

Mystery 1:  What is the origin of the Yosemite Sam Emblem?  Who started it and when?
Clue:   It came into being before "58".

Mystery 2:  In the late 50's the Captain's Gig was a gift from the people of Baltimore.  There was a Plaque commemorating this gift.  After the gig came out second best in a meeting with an immovable object, it was replace by a standard "Naval" issue gig.  The question now is, what happened to the plaque?
                                Clue:   Ain't got a one.

Lets go mates, inquiring minds want to know.
