It was during that time that Chaplain Watson and the Whetstone newsletter gave me strength and courage. My father became ill again and I contacted Chaplain Watson to keep him up-to-date on his condition. Once again, Chaplain Watson was there with phone calls, cards of encouragement and prayers. I am still coping with the loss of my father whom my brother and I loved very much. My father was a very special man.

I want to take this moment to urge all members to keep in touch with old shipmates. Believe me you will reap the rewards ten-fold. I would like to ask that if any members of the Whetstone Association during 1950-1954 have any old pictures or stories of my father, I would like to hear from you. I would like to make a scrapbook and any pictures that you can copy and send to me would be greatly appreciated. Please send to me in care of either Marion Goble or Chaplain Watson.

I want to encourage shipmates to stay in contact with the Whetstone Association and Champlain Watson as they are there for you. Thanks again, Chaplain Watson. You definitely are a godsend.

From Marvin:  Our Association is here for all of you in our Whetstone family. Regardless of your need..…illness, death in family, problems or, simply, someone to talk with. Do no hesitate to reach out and let me know if I can help you as Chaplain of the Association.

We are truly blessed in our Whetstone family by the friendships and encouragement we received from one another. I have asked Terri Davis, whose father was Murate Davis (BM2, 1950-1954) to share with all of you. Terri shares from her heart and reinforces what the Whetsone Association is all about.

My name is Terri J. Davis and my father was Murate (Mert to friends) E. Davis. He was a shipmate on the Whetstone from 1950-1954. I would like to express my gratitude to Chaplain Marvin Watson and shipmates of the Whetstone Association for their prayers and thoughts during the illness of my father who passed away on December 23, 2002.

The Whetstone family and memories of the time he spent on the ship meant a lot to my father. I can remember as a child seeing the picture that hung on his wall of the original ship and pictures of the crewmembers from 1950-1954. Oh, the stories he would tell and how proud he was of those stories. My father was a very proud man and believed in protecting his country. I can remember how excited he was when he was reunited with two shipmates - Joe Kirby and Charles Pierce. They even came to visit him some years ago. My father's oldest grandson made a lifelong friend when he met Joe Kirby. When my father had surgery two years ago I was so scared and I reached out to Chaplain Watson for prayer for my father.
