Text Box: WHETSTONE MODEL

Shortly after the 2002 Hampton, Virginia reunion, Don Czech (RM 1969-70) called me regarding a plastic model of an LSD (produced in the late 1960s) that was being auctioned on e-bay.  Since his hobby is putting models together, he thought the Association might be interested in obtaining one for display at reunions.  I told him if he could purchase at a reasonable price and if he was willing to put it together, we would go for it.  He received the model and opened the box and the hull had twisted from years of storage.  A friend of his told him about a technique for straightening the hull; however, the total process was well over a year before the model was in a condition to put together.  During the building process, Don chose to have the model incorporate design from 1945 to various upgrades added to the ship through 1969.  The goal was to have the model complete prior to the Seattle reunion, but things didn’t go that way.  I picked up the model this week from Don and wanted to share a couple pictures of the completed project.  Don did a wonderful job and even though our pictures don’t do it justice, it is something to see and we will have it at the Corpus Christi reunion.  Thanks Don.  We all appreciate your unselfish effort and time involved  for this project.    Marion Goble  (BT 1963-66)
