Shipmates:    Only 13 months until the next reunion! We were hoping to put together a  3-day cruise for this reunion, however, all feasible 3-day cruises have been cancelled for 2004. Therefore, we will continue with the format of past reunions. We are seeking a hotel that will host our reunion in August 2004, thereby allowing those that wish to take an Alaska cruise the time to do so before or after the reunion. We are confident that we will have a hotel and dates for the reunion by our September newsletter. We are planning a 4-day reunion (Wednesday thru Saturday) which will hopefully allow more free time for shipmates to visit in the hospitality room and rekindle friendships.

We trust you will enjoy the article about our Chaplin, Marvin Watson. For those of us who know him, we believe the article emphasizes his strengths -- his faith and his continuous show of love, concern and commitment to his fellow shipmates and all mankind. His commitment to the family of the Whetstone Association is constant and he is always willing to call anyone, write anyone or counsel anyone that has a need. Don't hesitate to contact Marvin if you need someone to talk to. I consider Marvin to be a brother and a friend, as well as a fellow shipmate of the "Stone."  Many say the Navy will either shape you up or grind you down. Marvin has been shaped by the "Stone" and others in his life to seek goodness and hold on to the faith of God, giving comfort to his fellow man, regardless of where that person has walked. It is a pleasure to have him as Chaplain of the Whetstone Association.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Seattle and wish the very best to each of you and your families this summer.

Marion Goble (BT, 1963-66)

DRUG PROBLEM

I had a drug problem when I was young.

I was drug to church on Sunday morning.

I was drug to church for weddings and  funerals.

I was drug to family reunions no matter the weather.

I was drug to the bus stop to go to school every weekday.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults and teachers.

I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents

Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would certainly be a better place.

Again, thank you to all shipmates that have sent dues and donations to the Association. Without your support, it would be impossible to publish "The Rolling Stone", maintain the Website, find lost shipmates and have our reunions. Dues are $20.00 a year, are tax deductible, and are strictly voluntary. All dues are applied to the year they are received unless designated otherwise. We recognize that not all are able to support the Association, but we welcome support from whomever is able. Dues received to date for 2003 are listed below. An asterisk designates dues paid for additional year(s). If anyone has paid and your name is not listed, please accept our apology. Please contact Kay Goble at 6200 Emerald Pines Cir, Ft. Myers, FL 33912, (239)768-1449, or e-mail: president@usswhetstone.net.  Please use this list as your receipt.
