He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. (NIV)

Yesterday afternoon, I received a telephone call at home from an inmate that had escaped from the penitentiary 4 days earlier. I urged him to turn himself in and return to the prison. After several minutes of conversation, he agreed, if I would come and pick him up and transport him back to the prison. I knew the situation could be very dangerous for me, especially the closer we would come to the prison that he might react in a violent manner. I spent several minutes seeking God as to whether I should go alone or take prison officials with me. I sensed the Lord guiding me to go alone. I read again Psalm 91 and prayed that God would protect the inmate and myself. I picked him up, and as we neared the prison, he became very agitated and nervous. I placed my hand on his back, as I drove, and assured him that God was with him and I loved him.  (Inmates need the assurance that they are loved and accepted). As he calmed down, we made the trip safely back to the prison. I thank God for His protection over both of us. No matter what situation you and I face we can trust God for guidance, direction and his protection over us, trading our fears for faith in him, no matter how intense our fears. To do this we must "dwell" and "rest" with him.

Are you assured of your salvation? Do you know your sins are forgiven and you are ready for heaven when the time comes? If you aren't sure and want to know you are going to heaven follow these three steps:

1. Admit you have sinned.  Romans 3:23
2. Believe in Jesus.  John 3:16
3. Confess and leave your sin behind.
     John 1:9
4. The Lord bless you and keep you.

Greetings shipmates and family and a special greeting to family members of shipmates that are no longer with us. You are all loved by the Whetstone family. May the joy of the Lord be your strength today. Please continue to send prayer requests to me of shipmates and family members that are in need of prayer. My devotional reading yesterday was from Psalm 91. God's protection in the midst of danger. God promises his help whenever we face danger. The Midwest has been hit very hard this past week by tornadoes. We have had numerous ones in Nebraska that have taken two lives from us and caused millions of dollars in damages. Numerous states are being hit hard by storms. People who cling to the Lord, though, can weather the fiercest storms of adversity. They are often heard to say, "I don't know what I would do without the Lord."  They know that the heavenly Father is always with them to strengthen, guard and protect them.

Psalm 91:1-7:  He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."  Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.
